English Language Requirements
English is the predominant language of instruction used in most study and research programmes offered by Irish educational institutions. It is expected that all students applying for degree courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Irish universities or colleges are able to speak, read and write English fluently, so they can play a full role in lectures, tutorials, seminar discussions and examinations.
All students should demonstrate a certain proficiency in English before they are accepted onto a higher-education course. Irish and international students applying through the CAO system must have a grade D or higher in English at ordinary level Leaving Certificate. Students who are applying directly to an Irish higher-education institution must meet the English language proficiency standards set by that institution.
There are a number of approved English language proficiency exams that are widely accepted, including Cambridge, JMB, IELTS, TOEFL and GCSE. Each Irish institution sets its own English language requirements for international students. You should contact the International Studies Office of your chosen institution for its requirements. Examples of test scores required include 220 (computer-based) and 550 (paper-based) for the TOEFL or a composite score of 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in any one component) for the IELTS.
Some international students decide to enrol in an English language course in Ireland, prior to applying to an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at an Irish third-level institution. There are a large number of schools in Ireland offering English language tuition courses, including preparation programmes for the aforementioned English language examinations.
Students who come to Ireland to study English should make sure they choose a reputable and professional English language school. The Advisory Council for English Language Schools (ACELS) is an Irish government-appointed body with the responsibility for overseeing English language teaching in Ireland. ACELS inspects language schools to ensure that instruction and facilities meet the required standards. The ACELS website (
www.acels.ie) holds a full list of recognised English language schools and organisations in Ireland.
Some Irish higher-level institutions have links with English language schools that provide the accreditation to meet their entrance requirements. Students should contact the International Studies Offices of their chosen institutions for advice concerning their options, and to ensure that they will meet all language-related entrance requirements.
